If I may add a little to the Four Living Creatures, Ezekiel also identifies them as Cherubs (Ezekiel 10: 20), so they may also be a connection to the earthly Temple (where the Ark of the Covenant–the earthly throne of God–is surrounded by four Cherub statues–two in the Ark itself and two more in the Holy of Holies itself).

Also, I have a question. As a child, I was taught in CCD that the phrase “holy of holies” was a quirk of the Hebrew language. Instead of suffixes, they would repeat adjectives (so “holy of holies” means “really holy”). If that’s true, then in the Mass (and of course in Heaven), could that be another reason that “holy” is repeated three times? (“Something greater than the temple is here”)

Thank you for this series, Dr. Marshall!

    • Correct – the same goes for the opposite: Abomination of Desolation = really evil!

  • Frank Miles

Many thanks Taylor Marshall for your very illuminating pod casts on Revelation. I have also been reading the book “We Win” by Rev. Barry F. Brinson which gives some detailed explanations.
Regarding the Book with Seven Seals in Chapter 5, you indicated it was the book of the New Testament. However, in “We Win” it suggests that it is the book referenced in Daniel Ch. 12. Here is the excerpt:
“Now at that time Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt. Those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse of heaven, and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. But as for you Daniel, conceal the words and seal up the book until the end of time; many will go back and forth and knowledge will increase.” (Dan. 12:1-4). The book written about in Daniel has been sealed up until the end of time. Daniel predicts a time of distress will occur prior to the end. And at the end, the book will be opened and those whose name is found in the book will be rescued. The book that is about to be opened is the book spoken of in Daniel 12.
The prophet Ezekiel is given a scroll and on it, front and back, was lamentation, mourning, and woe. See Ezekiel 2:8-10. Note that the book in Revelation is written inside and on its back. The seals of the book must be broken in order to get to the inside of the book. The seals bring lamentation, mourning, and woe. The time of distress that has never occurred before, spoken of in Daniel, is now about to be revealed to John.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

    • This is correct. The key to Revelation is Daniel – especially here.

    • Also, the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments were written on all sides – so this scroll in Revelation is like a New Law of Christ.

  • Frank Miles

Echoing Jared Clark’s comment on “Holy, Holy, Holy” I was also told that the Hebrew language did not use/have superlatives. Thus, instead of saying Greater they would say “Great, Great” and instead of saying Greatest they would say “Great, Great, Great.” Hence the “Holy, Holy, Holy” was their way of saying “Holiest.”

Thank you so much for this series on Revelation. I listen to each podcast three times. Once while I am doing some physical task (folding laundry) then I listen to it with a print out of the chapters and note pad where I take copious notes.
The third time I listen eyes closed.

Since I am a convert and don’t have a lifetime of learning about the Catholic faith, I am truly enjoying learning so much from your Podcasts. I am so grateful that you offer that for our continuing education. And I especially enjoy the podcast on the book of Revelation. Thank you so much for satisfying my desire to learn.

Good Morning, I did not receive the 4th podcast from revelation study. I am receiving other e-mails so I was wondering if my name fell off of your list. Also, I signed up for the St Augustine book several months ago but never received the link–can that be sent again? I am sending this as a guest because I do not remember my password.

I am trying to use your podcasts as apologetics to a ‘self-proclaimed former (now anti) Catholic, who claims the Church is pagan, fallen away, etc, and only Martin Luther was right. Quite exhausting on one level, but fulfilling on another (I was able to explain a Catholic POV to a co-worker today on something).

    • Timothy Black

You might try this: Ask when exactly the Church became pagan and fell away? Have the person actually pick that moment in time when Christ abandoned his Church. What year was that? Ask if it was suddenly set right in 1517? What happened between the time that the Holy Spirit went into hiding and Luther? You’ll find that he probably won’t have answers. Just saying “it fell away” doesn’t make it true. You’ll also find that almost all Protestants have a view like this, usually called an apostasy. And that their sect is how “real Christians” worshiped until their founder, Luther, Calvin, John Smith, Osteen, etc…came and set it right. Check out “The Apostasy that Wasn’t” by Bennett.
