#054: Is God Male or Female – The Catholic Teaching

My goal this week is to talk to you about a controversial issue in Western culture. You may have wondered about it. You may have been asked to defend it and you did not know how to do it. It’s the question “Is God male or female?”

This question touches on Trinitarian theology, Eucharistic theology, whether or not women can be ordained to Holy Orders, and even the theology of Holy Matrimony.

Very informative podcast! Thank you for all you do. It is truly inspiring. I love to share all of the information with others especially your proverb of the week. I really miss your joke of the week on your podcasts. I loved sharing those jokes with others.

    • Dear Lisa,

      Thank you for the encouragement.

I was running out of jokes. I was spending as much time searching “clean jokes” as I was prepping the show. But if I hear some good ones, I’ll bring it back.

    Hello Dr. Marshall,

From a book of my father’s with Catholic quotes:

“Female and male God made the man, His image is the whole, not half.”

    – Coventry Patmore: The Angel in the House. (19th cent. )

    Says it so well.

Have not listen to the pod cast yet. Look forward to it.

    God Bless, Maria

  • Anne

I am glad you have chosen to speak on this topic. Being a Christian means following Jesus and his teachings. Jesus called God the “Father” and this is good enough for me.

  • This is not an important question, for it is quite obvious that both female and male are made perfect in God, but it is equally obvious that God willed himself to be thought of by us as a male “father”. It is God’s wisdom that has done this. For us to use our human understanding in the service of political correctness to take God’s wisdom someplace in need not go is a big waste of time. Furthermore, Catholicism has lifted up the Mary as the most perfect creature to have ever been born. No male could have the title of Mother of God, or Queen of Heaven, or Immaculate Conception. So, for God to be called a female would lessen Mary’s particular significance, and the general significance of the female’s place in creation. In my mind, this question is spiritually grotesque and theologically insignificant.

Dear Dr. Taylor, first i want to say sorry for my bad English. i want to ask you about your article, i have some internet problem in my country, so, may i know if you have a text file from your podcast? because it is more easier for me to have the text file.

  • Richard

Great podcast. I’m still listening through it. What you were saying about analogy reminded me of a passage in Maritain’s Degrees of Knowledge that has always stayed with me:

“It is a revealed analogy, the proxy or substitute of vision…. The mode of conception of signification is as deficient here … but what is signified—revealed, i.e. stripped of the veils which belong to our natural knowledge, but left or shown under other veils—is this time the Godhead as such, God as he sees himself and who gives himself to us—in darkness and without our laying hands on him….

These created analogues form part of our most earthly and human world: what is more earthly than a father and his son? What notion is more common, more heavy with human echoes, than that of buying back? Thus the super-analogy of faith is more humble than that of metaphysics, it wears the livery of poverty. But we know from God it attains to the divine secrets which metaphysics does not know. Once shown by revelation as likenesses to what is hidden in God, the mind perceives that things like paternity and filiation can be referred to the transcendental order, have an analogical value of rightful proportionality. The names of Father, Son and Holy Ghost are not metaphorical, they describe … what the divine persons formally and intrinsically are. The word redemption is not a metaphor, and intrinsically and formally expresses the work accomplished by the Son of God. Under the livery of poverty the superanalogy of faith hides a supernatural vigor, by it we attain in darkness to the Godhead itself, the divine essence….” (298-299)

And Maritain says elsewhere that God made use of our language to speak to us, to be understood by us, and in so doing elevates our language and concepts to their truest sense (filiation, paternity, family, love, etc.).

Excellent podcast, one of the best, that takes on contentious concepts and makes a beautiful case for Catholic theory and practice. Podcast is a clear voice in our contemporary culture of gender confusion where boys and girls become purple penguins.

  • EricBoutin

Hey Taylor, I really love the podcast. I also just joined the Institute so I look forward to exploring that some more. I have what I hope will be some constructive criticism for you. I think this is the first time I’ve noticed this but could you please put a microphone on your wife next time. It was very hard to hear her especially when listening in the car. Thanks! Keep up the good work!
