Honestly I would suggest to people Aquinas’ own abbreviated Summa. Personally before my conversion to Catholicism I had taken a class in ancient political philosophy which covered Aristotle’s Ethics, Politics and the parts of the Summa Theologica (ST) on the law. I can’t imagine approaching it without first understanding both Aristotle on which Aquinas builds and the structure of ST itself.

Barring being able to take such a class if people really want to read the ST for themselves I would still suggest starting with Aquinas’ abbreviated Summa and also Peter Kreeft’s abridged Summa together this will familiarize one with both the subject matter and the structure of the ST. I would also suggest a book called the A-Z of Thomas Aquinas which explains a lot of the specialized terminology of the Summa, for a single example Exitus-reditus, literally meaning “going out and returning, which represents the structure of the ST, itself, that begins with God, goes out from Him and returns to Him.

I wouldn’t recommend most people attempt to just power through it like the man in the interview because I believe that will prove to be a recipe for frustration for the vast majority of people. I can’t stress enough how helpful it is to understand the structure of the ST and by extension to understand Aquinas’ scholasticism and medieval mind set. Peter Kreeft’s abbreviated Summa tackles this subject wonderfully in the introduction so at the very least try and read that.

Along with the interviewer I also suggest that Aquinas in 50 pages will also serve one as a great primer for the ST.

Finally if you really are a reader who enjoys the act itself then what I’ve found is that in learning difficult intellectual subjects in philosophy and science, such as Heidegger, Jung, Quantum Physics and right now for me Lacan, reading biographies about these men to have been invaluable. So if you have the time you reading a couple of the many wonderful biographies on Aquinas first, along with the other suggestion, will make the ST a joyful, fulfilling and rewarding experience.

I would even suggest this if you end up taking Dr. Marshall class because it makes the learning curve much less steep and the process of moving up it more enjoyable.
