#055: Why Do We Baptize Babies? The Covenantal Argument

My goal this week is to talk to you about infant baptism. If faith is something someone must know and understand and it must be a personal decision from the heart, why do we baptize children? They do not make a decision? Moreover, one might say that Catholicism has so many nominal members precisely because of infant baptism. Would it better to just wait till people mature and make the decision themselves? We will look at these common objections and then the biblical and historical reasons for baptizing infants.

  • “Baptized” should be “Baptize” in the title.

  • Victor

Doctor Marshall, it’s my opinion that this podcast is long but well worth listening to about the importance of Pato Baptisma and certainly a Trello for Catholics to fallow. Having said that, we must be patient with the angel child Gabriel who in this podcast reminds me of imaginary sinner vic who on occasions can be like a cooky monster if you get my drift?

I hear YA! Let’s just say Victor that it is close to Halloween and simply sum “IT” UP with “Like Father, Like Son… Really? LOL 🙂

    God Bless

  • John Scherrer

    Hi Taylor,

I guess I would understand the “foot that slips” in the proverb a bit more literally – counting on a faithless friend is like loosing our footing leading to a fall.
Are we standing on the Rock or the shifting sands?
When I say, “My foot is slipping,”your mercy, LORD, holds me up. Psalm 94:18

    • John,

That works too. Let’s pray that we acquire faithful companions to catch us when we slip.

  • God’s grace…before our faith.

The Baptism of infants is pure gospel.

Don’t back down from folks that deny God works in Baptism.

  • Robert Auten

It is Helpful to recall that Jesus healed and resurrected children because of the faith of their parents. But I have never heard that ciecumcision was only looking forward to the coming of Messiah…where did that idea come from? Can you develop that idea for me?
